Travelling by public transport is a fantastic way to get around and see the sights while abroad. Not only will you mix in with the locals and get a true taste of what living there is like, in most cases it is also cheap, easy and convenient.

Nearly all major holiday destinations will have a comprehensive network of buses, while big cities tend to have an underground railway and street-level trams.

However, sometimes you don’t know what bus to take or which train platform you should be on. The process of buying and using a ticket is different in most countries, too. So here is what to consider.

Be prepared

Before travelling, it is a good idea to research what public transport is available at your chosen destination. While the UK government is able to provide foreign travel advice for more serious issues, the country you are visiting should have an English language website with details about its transport system.

You may be able to download a timetable of buses and trains or even a map of a metro or subway system. If you don’t want to carry this around with you, it might be possible to download an app straight to your Smartphone.

If you’re planning to travel long distances while abroad, buying a ticket online in advance is also a good idea. Several public transport websites will have this facility and all you need to do is print out or collect tickets once you reach your destination.

Purchasing a ticket

Unlike the London Underground, several forms of public transportation in Europe and beyond allow passengers to board without having to go through barriers. However, this doesn’t mean you can travel for free, and if you get caught without a ticket the fine can be hefty.

Therefore it is essential to always buy a ticket, as the last thing you want is to be issued with a penalty. If you’re unsure about what ticket to purchase, bus drivers or station staff are there to help out. Automated machines usually have an English language option as well, to avoid any confusion.

Most major cities will have some sort of unlimited travel pass or a pay-as-you-go card that will ensure value for money. This is bound to be more cost-effective than purchasing several individual tickets.

Knowing where to go

Once you’ve got your ticket, the next step is knowing which bus to catch or what train to board. Again, if you’re stuck, then ask a native, as more often than not they will be willing to help.

During the journey, track your journey on a map, watch any onboard monitors or listen to any announcements. Although these may be in a foreign language, it is often easy to pick out a specific stop or station name.

Be polite and stay safe

Talking, using a mobile phone or listening to music is often prohibited in certain sections of a bus or train, so make sure you are polite and courteous at all times.

Even if you are in an extremely safe destination, it is important to always have your wits about you. Thieves will be on the lookout for the most vulnerable, so keep money and belongings concealed.

Having an accident abroad can sometimes happen too, so be sure to put safety first at all times. Should the worst happen and you do have an accident, you may be able to claim on your insurance or receive compensation.

Malta may be a small island but it has a lot to offer. If you want to learn English in an English-speaking country and enjoy a Mediterranean climate at the same time, then it could be for you.

1. Perfect for young learners

Maltese people are known for their friendliness and hospitality towards tourists, which is one of the contributing factors that makes Malta one of the safest places to live in the world with its low crime rates and warm relaxed atmosphere. This makes Malta perfect for young learners. If you are thinking of sending your child (8-17 years) to an English school in Malta for summer, you can be confident they will be safe. By choosing a trusted company such as IELS Malta you can be sure that your child will be fully supervised, learn a lot and have fun at the same time. Starting this summer (2013) IELS Club Residence Summer School will be upgrading their accommodation to the four stars Topaz Hotel in Bugibba, without a price increase. Therefore, your child can enjoy comfortable, quality accommodation during their educational holiday.

2. The climate

Situated below the south of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta enjoys a pleasant climate similar to that of southern Greece and Italy. The climate is typically Mediterranean with short, mild winters without snow fall and warm, dry, sunny summers. There is low rainfall and up to 12 hours of sunshine each day during the summer. Therefore, by taking an English language course in Malta, whatever the season pleasant walks, eating in open air restaurants and lazy days on the beach can complement your study.

3. The History

Malta has 7000 years of history which is reflected in its architecture. One noteworthy site is the 16th century Grandmasters’ Palace, which now houses parliament. Malta has three pieces which have been declared UNESCO world heritage sites. The first is the Megalithic temples, 7 in total, 2 of the most impressive can be found on Malta´s sister island of Gozo. They are huge bronze structures which are the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. Valleta, Malta´s capital, is also a world heritage site. Built after the great Siege, it has hundreds of monuments making it a valuable historic area. During your study you will be able to enjoy Malta´s historic wonders.

4. The Beaches and Natural Attractions

Malta provides the opportunity to study English and enjoy the sun at the same time. If you are an active person you can enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and water skiing at Malta´s larger and more popular beaches such as Mellieħa Bay. The more rocky beaches offer more seclusion and their clear blue waters are perfect for snorkeling. The islands to the west of Malta are a must see. The cave rock formations, the inland sea and fungus rock are all popular natural attractions. You can easily put the holiday into your “study holiday”.

5. Language Tourism

Language tourism has been an important contributor to the Maltese economy for over two decades. By studying in Malta you will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and be part of a large international student community. Traditionally, Malta attracted students from Europe, but nowadays the amount of Japanese, Russian and Brazilian students is increasing. Therefore, you will be able to make a truly global network of friends. Malta has retained its popularity due to its strong system for monitoring school performance. The EFL Monitoring Board ensures, each year, that every school is up to scratch. Therefore you can be confident that you will receive quality education.

With welcoming English-speaking locals, sunny weather, history and attractions, quality schools and a large international student scene, Malta is a great destination to learn English.

Ah, Europe. Whether it is the desire to eat pizza in Naples, hike the Pyrenees or lounge on a Grecian beach, Europe holds not only thousands of years of history, but modern charm and easy accessibility. Europe’s rail system is renowned worldwide for being expansive, inexpensive, and easy to get around. Here’s a quick guide to your ideal European vacation by rail:

When to go

Popular tourist destinations can become overrun in July and August, when summer vacation coincides with warm weather. Get some extra cash in your pocket from April spring cleaning—www.musicmagpie.com helps you to sell your old CDs, DVDs and games online—and head out in May or June for less congestion.

Why by rail

In Los Angeles and Dallas, it’s necessary to have a car to move around. This isn’t the case in Europe, where walk-able cities neatly spread across a smaller continent make public transportation efficient and inexpensive. An interconnected and expansive rail system, not to mention the metros and subways in big cities, make a trip from London to Athens possible without even leaving the train or train station.

Besides the ease and efficiency of public transportation, cars in Europe can end up causing more pain than pleasure. The cities are smaller and more crowded, making finding a place to park can take up hours of precious sightseeing time. Not to mention the gas being more expensive and the drivers more aggressive than in American cities!

If you’re tempted by Ryanair and Easyjet’s quick and cheap flights, remember that by the time you’ve gotten to the airport, gone through check-in, boarded the plane, waited for your bags and arrived at your hotel, you’ve spent the same amount of time and money as a train. As for bus travel—forget it! What the bus journey from London to Paris does in nine hours, the Eurostar manages in two.

Once you’re decided to travel Europe by rail, look into buying a rail pass. If you want to visit multiple countries, unlimited passes provide you a great deal of flexibility for minimal cost. There are also consecutive and Flexi passes where you can choose the days you want to travel and the countries you want to travel in. You can always just buy tickets when and how you need them, if you prefer being spontaneous.

What to see

If it’s your first time to Europe, a tour of England, France, Italy and Spain is a perfect introduction to the continent. You can travel from Paris to London in two hours and Barcelona to Madrid in two and a half hours. If you’re returning, however, there are less expensive and more adventurous options in Europe—all still accessible by rail.

Eastern Europe has charming cities that are inexpensive and less touristy. Budapest is known as the Paris of the East, and the train from Vienna takes just two hours. If you’re daring enough to cross continents into Asia, the Trans-Siberian railway is a good bet for the more adventurous spirit. Be prepared for a long journey, though—Moscow to Vladivostok travels 6,152 miles in 36 hours!

Most travelers to India only know of Hyderabad as a business hosting city or as the IT capital of India. Few know that Hyderabad hosts among the most breathtaking and memorable attractions in India, some of which have been in existence for more than the 400 years that have gone by since this city’s construction. Most of these attractions are in the Old City section of Hyderabad which is largely the historical region of the city. While on holiday here Crazeal service coupons will connect you to the city’s best experts at affordable prices.

You should begin your tour with the Charminar, a structure built to commemorate the site where Quli Qutb Shah prayed for an end to the most horrible plague epidemic in the history of India. The iconic Charminar towers stand up to 48.7 meters above the ground, some 140 steps up the staircase. Charminar also hosts a mosque that offers 45 prayer spaces. From there you can then visit the Mecca Masjid Mosque which is the biggest and among the oldest mosques in Hyderabad. The mosque was built between 1617 and 1694 initially by Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah although it was Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor, who completed it. You will be amazed by this giant granite mosque’s awe-inspiring and highly artistic interiors.

You can then head to the nearby Chowmahalla Palace, the historical seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. This palace was used by the Nizam to entertain royal visitors and official guests. Next, you should visit the Falaknuma Palace built in 1872 by Nawab Viqar al-Umra. A stunning and non-conventional architectural feat, the Falaknuma Palace is the grand expression of opulence associated with Nizam’s palaces. You should then visit the Golconda Fort, historically the Qutb Shahi kingdom’s most important capital.

It is also worth visiting the Qutubshahi Tombs which are just a kilometer away from Golconda Fort and where you will explore the magnificent mosques built by the Qutubshahi dynasty, the tombs of Quli Qutb Shah, the kingdom’s founder, and subsequent rulers, and the larger Qutub Shahi Tombs Site Museum. Other notable museums comparable to the grandeur of Qutubshahi are the Nizam’s Museum (which hosts the world’s largest wardrobe built by Mahbub Ali Pasha, an Indian princess who never wore the same clothing item twice), the Moula Ali Dargah built by Asif Jahis in memory of Hazrat Ali (Prophet Muhammad’s son in law), Salar Jung Museum, the Raymond Tomb Museum, the Archival Museum, the Birla Planetarium and Science & Technological Museum, the AP State Museum, and the Birla Mandir.

There are numerous other attractions to visit while in Hyderabad including the Osmania Arts College, the Paigah Tombs, the Birla Mandir Hindu temple, the Balaji Temple, the Sanghi Temple, the Karmanghat Hanuman temple, the Iskon Temple, the Mahankali Temple, the Peddamma Temple, and many others.

Spare time to visit the Bagh-e-aam (public gardens for the commoners), the Indira Park, the Sanjeeviah Park, the Krishna Kanth Park, the Lotus Pond, the Botanical Garden, the KBR National Park and the Chilkur Wildlife Park. For those who love active adventure it is recommended to visit the Jalavihar Family Water Park, the Mahaveer Vanasthali Wildlife Park, the Jalagam Vengal Rao Park, the Lumbini Park, the Heritage Walk, as well as the NTR Gardens.
